National Environment Week Celebration

Minimization of Air Pollution through Sustainable Forest Management

From 30th May to 05th June 2019

03rd  June 2019 - Biodiversity Conservation Day

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) was launched following a decision taken at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972 with a view to drawing attention of the global population to conservation of Environment, and 05th of June every year has been declared as World Environment Day to mark this day of its initiation. Therefore the United Nations Environment Program has declared “Air Pollution” as the theme for World Environment Day 2019. Hence, Sri Lanka celebrates World Environment Day this year under the theme “Minimization of Air Pollution through Sustainable Forest Management” targeting reduction of air pollution by proper forest management and an increase in the forest cover.

As per the Cabinet Memorandum submitted by H.E. the President in 2016 on the heading “World Environment Day Celebration Program”, a National Environment Week has been declared parallel to the national celebration of the World Environment Day. Accordingly, the week from 30th May to 05th June 2019 has been declared as the “National Environment Week” where 03rd June declared as Biodiversity Conservation Day.

Accordingly Biodiversity Secretariat of Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment in collaboration with Small Fishers Federation (Sudeesa) conducted an awareness workshop for officers of the Forest Department on 3rd June 2019 at Sudeesa Mangrove Museum Premises  in Pambala successfully. The objective of this awareness workshop was to give practical knowledge on identification of seedlings, how to select species for specific areas, establishment of mangrove nurseries and management. Approximately 70 Forest Officers were participated for this awareness workshop.
