Green Development Initiatives (GDIs) are innovative tools for operationalizing sustainable development concept what nations are aspiring. The Environment Planning and Economics Division dedicated to integrating sustainable development principles into national policy and planning process. Stemming from the Ministry of Environment’s mission as the leading ministry entrusted to sustaining country’s natural resources base and the ecosystem services, following GDIs being operationalizes by this division.

- Preparation & Implementation of National Environmental Action Plan
- Coordination of surakimu ganga national environment programme
- Implementation of Sustainable Consumption and Production Policy
- Implementation of Green Procurement Policy
- Eco friendly alternative products promotion, green jobs and sustainable village national programme implementation.
- Implement greening industries programme
- Promotion and implementation of eco-label programme
- Implementing National Green reporting system in Sri Lanka
- Establish green accounting system in relevant sectors and incorporate into National development plans
- Coordinate to achieve relevant SDG targets and establish reporting mechanism
- Implementation of Policies/strategies to conserve/restore and manage bio diversity and ecosystem services in Environmental Sensitive Areas
- Commemoration of World Earth Day
- Facilitate for awareness and training on green initiatives
