Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management was established in 1963 as the Coast Protection Unit and later upgraded to an "A Grade Department" in 1984. Its primary mission is to conserve Sri Lanka's coastal zone, promote sustainable development, and manage coastal resources effectively. The department implements coastal stabilization projects and oversees the Coast Conservation and Coastal Zone Management Act No. 57 of 1981 (amended in 1988 and 2011), which grants it authority over coastal zone administration, resource management, and development planning. Over the years, the department has been under various ministries, most recently transitioning to the Ministry of Environment as of November 2024. Its key responsibilities include shoreline management, coastal resource conservation, and the preparation of the Coastal Zone Management Plan.
