National Botanic Gardens of Sri Lanka are scientific establishments performing studies and research on plants, bio diversity and its sustainable use and floriculture; ex-situ conservation of plants; plant connected education as well as activities to promote and develop floriculture in the island. They also provide leisure promoting love for nature for over 2.5 million both local and foreign people who visit the gardens annually.
National Botanic Gardens are managed under the Department of National Botanic Gardens i.e. Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya (1821), Hakgala Botanic Gardens (1861), Henerathgoda Botanic Gardens, Gampaha (1876) established by the British and Mirijjawila Dry Zone Botanic Gardens (2013), Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens (2015) established by local experts and Ganewatta Medicinal Plant Gardens (1950). Sri Lanka’s Botanic Gardens have a long and proud history goes back to 14th century of ancient Kings’ era. Since then they flourished while providing opportunities for public to study and admire sustainably conserve plant resources in natural and manmade environment.
