Youth Negotiation Training Programme
Empowering Youth for Climate Action
From 18 - 20 June 2025, a transformative Youth Climate Negotiations Training was held in Colombo, jointly organized by the Climate Change Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment, UNICEF, and the Commonwealth Climate Finance Access Hub.
This 3-day capacity-building workshop brought together 30 dynamic youth and young administrators from across Sri Lanka to strengthen their understanding of climate negotiations and processes under the UNFCCC.
Training Objectives:
✅ Understand the origins and evolution of global climate governance (UNFCCC, Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement)
✅ Learn how to craft impactful intervention statements
✅ Engage confidently with negotiation blocs
✅ Contribute meaningfully to technical position papers for COP
The workshop kicked off with an engaging panel discussion titled "Mechanics of Climate Negotiations in UNFCCC Processes: Perspectives from the Global South," featuring real negotiators from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the Maldives. Youth leaders from India, Maldives, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Pakistan also joined virtually, making the session truly regional and inclusive.
This initiative marks a powerful step towards equipping Sri Lanka’s youth with the tools to shape climate policy and become tomorrow’s negotiators.
