World Environment Day Celebration Programme 2025 - June 05, 2025
World Environment Day is the major international day for the environment, declared by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and held annually since 1973. It is celebrated by millions of people all over the world.
Sri Lanka has declared environment week from 30th May to 5th of June in parallel to the World Environment Day. This week declared in term of the cabinet memorandum submitted on April 28th 2016. The last day of the Environment Week, which coincided with the World Environment Day on June 05th, concluded on 05th June with an environmental celebration held at Nidahas Mawatha Kegalle under the patronage of HE the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
This Environment Day marked several special events. Some of them were, declaration of five forests such as "Nilgala" , "Kottawa" , "Werahen Kanda", "Thulhirikanda", and "Udaliyedda" as reserves. Awarded best Environmentally Friendly- Green railway stations with the certificates and cash prizes. And also announced three schools in Kegalle district to develop as eco-friendly model schools.
An very valuable event for the country was, handing over to the President of declaring the area as a sanctuary where the fish bandula barb, commonly known as Bandula Pethia, is a species of endemic to Sri Lanka where it is only known from near Galapitamada in the Warakapola Divisional Secretariat, Kegalle District. As this critically endangered species only was known from a single unprotected site upto this day, where the population consists of an estimated around 200 individuals.
HE the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Governor Champa Janaki Rajaratne, Minister of Environment Dr. Dhammika Patabendi, Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment K. R. Uduwawala, Kegalle District Councilors, Kegalle District Secretary H. M. J. M. Herath, Embassy officials, Government Officials, children and Uruwarige Vannila Atthan, environmentalists, journalists and a large number of people from Kegalle and its surrounding areas participated in this event.
This year, World Environment Day 2025, celebrated on June 5, Under the theme: “Ending Plastic Pollution”
