
Hosted by the UN Environment Programme, the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) brings together representatives of the 193 Member States of the UN, businesses, civil society and other stakeholders to agree on policies to address the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
The resumed fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2) took place online and in Nairobi from 28 February – 2 March 2022.
The overall theme for UNEA-5 was “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” highlighting the pivotal role nature plays in our lives and in social, economic and environmentally sustainable development.
Sri Lankan delegation headed by Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, attended in-person and virtually at UNEA 5.2 in Nairobi taken the opportunity to share the best practices for sustainability. Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera met Inger Anderson, UNEP Executive Director and shared the best practices which address the Triple planetary crisis. Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry handed over Sri Lanka’s National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP) to the Executive Director to show Sri Lanka’s concrete steps taken.
Inger Anderson, greatly appreciated the Sri Lanka’s leadership on UN Global Campaign on Sustainable Nitrogen Management and encourage Sri Lanka to continue the efforts towards achieving 2030 SDGs. In her tweet, Executive Director mentioned the fruitful discussion: a meeting with Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Environment for Sri Lanka ??we discussed the need for international cooperation on sustainable nitrogen management. Great to see ambitious environmental targets on renewable energy; forests & plastics pollution.
UNEA 5.2 was a historic moment for Sri Lanka to showcase country’s leadership towards achieving the SDGs and address the Pollution crisis globally.
