In accordance with the cabinet decision on the National Policy on Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs) in Sri Lanka, a combined National Steering Committee has been established to oversee the administration, implementation, and monitoring of this policy, announcing and guiding the management of identified environmentally sensitive areas in addition to providing guidance and decision-making relevant to the preparation and implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plans (NBSAP). The first combined steering committee was convened on 17th May 2024 under the chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Environment, with the participation of steering committee members. During the steering committee meeting, it was discussed the National Policy on Environmentally Sensitive Areas, the framework for governance of Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs), the adoption and way forward of identified ESAs based on faunal analysis, and relevant matters.
