In 2019, the United Nations General Assembly designated 7 September as the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies. The Day – whose observance is facilitated by the UN Environment Progamme (UNEP) – stresses the importance of clean air and the urgent need for efforts to improve air quality to protect human health.
Air Resource Management and National Ozone Unit commemorated Fourth International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies on 07 September 2023. The theme of the day is "Together for Clean Air," emphasizing the necessity for stronger partnerships, collective responsibility, and increased investments in combating air pollution. Observance of the day hold under patronage of the State Minister to the Ministry of Transport, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment and Secretary to the Ministry of Transport and Commissioner General of Motor Traffic as well as other distinguished guests on September 7, 2023, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am in Battaramulla, in front of the “Sethsiripaya” old building.
Accordingly, in collaboration with Ministry of Transport and the Vehicular Emission Testing Program of Department of Motor Traffic as well as Central Environmental Authority jointly conducted promotional public awareness program aimed at tackling roadside vehicle-induced air pollution. The event colored with environment pioneers who stand with holdings of number of messages which demonstrating how to mitigating air pollution, the importance of air quality.
In addition to the national ceremonial event below mention programmes were also conducted.
- Road side vehicle emission spot testing programs in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kurunegala and Gampaha together with the Vehicle Emissions Fund, Central Environmental Authority, District Secretarial Office and Divisional Secretarial Office.
- School Children Awareness Progrmme were held on Development Officers under Ministry of Environment who attached in District and Divisional Secretarial Offices
- With the participation of the Secretary of this Ministry and Project Director of the Vehicle Emission Fund,’Nagitimu Sri Lanka” in Sirasa TV on 06.09.2023 aimed to educate the public about the importance of this day and the and importance of air quality for a safer environment.
- With the participation of the Director of Air Resource Management and National Ozone Unit and the Project Director of the Vehicle Emission Fund, ‘Mehewara’ program of Swarnavahini channel on 07.09.2023 aimed to educate the public about the importance of this day and the work carried out by each institution for Air Resource Management
